Hello, my name is Billy Knight.

I am a SQL Server developer with over eight years commercial development experience in database design/building, integration services and reporting services using both SQL Server 2005 and 2008 R2. I use T-SQL to write all stored procedures, triggers, scalar functions and views.

I enjoy working both as part of a development team as well as working on solo projects. I also have my own workstation set up at home, which enables me to both work from home and learn new technologies such as:

  • HTML5
  • CSS3
  • JavaScript
  • JQuery
  • JSON
  • VB.Net

Using paid on-line tutorials.

I also have over fifteen years commercial experience developing MS Access front-end databases using MS Access 2000, 2003 and 2010.

Bray Leino Ltd

Systems Developer (SQL Server/ETL/MS Access)

Design and development of the core Continuing Healthcare and Individual Funding Requests systems using MS Access and SQL Server 2008R2.

Technologies used:

  • MS Access
  • VBA
  • MSSQL 2008r2
  • Cursorsets
  • Stored Procedures
  • Scalar Functions
  • SQL Server Agent
  • SQL Server Integration Services
  • SQL Server Reporting Services

I have recently completed two projects which enabled data transmission between an internal MS Access GUI and an external facing .NET website.

These allow data input,  triage and file transfer from the web into the NHS N3 network via a secure triage form.

One of my proudest achievements to date within Bray Leino was developing an additional database product for one of our largest clients, enabling them to automate mass data cleansing and migration of over a million records which would otherwise have been a manual undertaking, The product has been added to the company products portfolio and sold as an additional tool.

My responsibilities also include gathering system requirements from our clients. This is usually done either over the phone, or via a remote connection to the clients own work station. I document all requirements in notepad, and send a word document copy to our client for confirmation and sign off. Occasionally this may include pre-visualised objects (forms/reports) to determine that we are going in the right direction.

As well as developing enhancements for and supporting our core products, I have also developed several data migration tools for transferring / updating bulk records simultaneously for several of our clients for data housekeeping purposes.

I have been tasked with developing several client and employer BI Stack (SSIS) applications for bulk data management and file output. Some of these projects are automated and are required to be run daily using the SQL Job Agent.

I also provide technical 1st and 2nd line support for all company core products, and from time to time I remotely connect to a client’s PC to provide the support required.

Eden Red Ltd

Systems Developer (SQL Server/ETL/MS Access)

EdenRed (formerly Capital-Incentives & Motivation Ltd) are a motivation and rewards company located in the Chester Business Park, Chester. EdenRed offer both bespoke and off the peg incentive schemes for rewarding staff and customers using both pre-loaded reward cards, vouchers and Capital Bonds. I spent eight years with this company further developing my MS Access database programming skills, and learning to develop bespoke incentive management databases for our clients.  Each database was designed to manage employee and incentive details. Upload incentive data files (usually in Excel format) to calculate award allocations, and produce employer and employee liability tax reports. Between 2001 and 2009 I developed a total of eighteen MS Access databases and three SQL Server databases (two SQL databases specifically for SSIS projects).

Here I also learned to develop DTS packages with SQL Server 2000, creating small projects before moving up to SSIS development with Visual Studio 2005/2008.  I developed several projects for our international clients from America, Europe, Asia as well as the UK.

The company also gave me some time to learn SSRS and develop reports using reporting services in Visual Studio 2005. I subsequently converted several excel export file projects into web based reports for our then parent company ‘Accor Services’ in London.

Cammell Laird Ltd

MS Access Developer

I began my career as a MS Access programmer at Cammell Lairds shipyard in 1999 whilst on placement from a government ‘Training For Work’ scheme.  I given the task of developing the Cammell Laird employee database in 2000. The database recorded all employee details, where they worked, their vehicle details and photographs for their ID badges.

I developed a second database to manage the hiring and returning of equipment on-site. This was due to equipment  being hired, but not being returned and attracting further charges. Becoming an MS Access developer at Cammell Laird lead to my first official job as a programmer in April 2000 until April 2001.

Before becoming a programmer I worked as a data entry clerk, stock controller and draft excluder engineer (and surveyor).

Details of my previous employers from 1986 to 1999 are available upon request.
